On 20-21 February 2025, during the ІII International Scientific and Practical Conference “Mechanisms for combating modern challenges and threats: Lessons from the EU for Ukraine”, which was held within the EU Erasmus+ Project “Implementation of European Union mechanisms for combating modern challenges and threats” (101085700 – IMEU – ERASMUS-JMO-2022-HEITCH-RSCH) (2022-2025), a debate on “The EU Mechanisms for Combating Modern Challenges and Threats: Strengths vs Weaknesses” was held in the format of Karl Popper.
As part of the debate, the issues of the feasibility of signing the US-Ukraine rare earth mineral deal and further strengthening Ukraine-EU-NATO cooperation, as well as the challenges and threats related to it, were discussed.
Its main goal was to develop the students’ critical thinking skills, skills of searching for arguments, respect for opponents, and to politely convey their own opinions.
The debate rules stipulate the formation of two teams of opponents and a team of judges from debate participants, who vote for the team whose arguments were more convincing during the discussion.
More than 20 participants, including students of Sumy State University majoring in international economic relations, tourism business, and the hospitality industry and students of other higher education institutions, scientists, teachers, business representatives, and other stakeholders, participated in the debate.
Participating in the debate helped the participants develop the crucial skills necessary to achieve success in life in a modern democratic society and to increase their level of knowledge.
