“I trust you as a partner”: Discussion of democratic values in the context of studying foreign language

On June 10, 2025, Associate Professor of the Department of International Economic Relations (BIEM) Svitlana Tarasenko and Associate Professor of the Department of German Philology (FFPh&SC) Olga Zhulavska presented the results of the second work package of the KA2 2024-1-RO01-KA220-HED- 000249951 “Digitally-Enhanced Foreign Language Education for Active European Citizenship and Democratic Culture” of the Erasmus+ program.

Third-year students specializing in Philology and International Economic Relations joined the discussion on the formation of democratic values through the study of foreign languages. The discussion focused on methods for the effective assimilation of democratic values, including cooperative tasks, gamification, role-playing games, and others. The issue of identifying democratic values in the phrase “I trust you as a partner” was especially actively discussed. Students noted that this phrase emphasizes such democratic values as openness to diversity, willingness to listen, trust, and respect for human dignity.

The project is being implemented within the cooperation framework between the departments of international economic relations (BIEM), German philology, and journalism and philology (FFPH&SC) at Sumy State University.
