On August 5 and 6, 2023, the University of Illinois and Stanford University hosted the immersive online conference “AI x Education Conference: Generating The Future of Education with AI”, an event focused on the adoption and utility of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The International Economic Relations Department teacher, a PhD, associate professor Oksana Zamora attended the event. Designed for K12 and Higher-Ed Educators & Administrators, this conference aimed to provide a platform for educators, administrators, AI experts, students, parents, and EdTech leaders to discuss the impact of AI on education, address current challenges and potentials, share their perspectives and experiences, and explore innovative solutions. With over 2,700 educators registered, the conference aimed to prioritize student perspectives and feature renowned thought leaders in the field.
Through interviews with 30 high school and college students nominated by teachers or who have shared their AI experiences, it is evident that students are concerned about the impact of AI on their future job prospects. They worry that their current skills could become obsolete and that AI tools may replace their roles. To address these concerns, educators must collaborate with students and revise their teaching materials to align with the evolving future of work. Professors should have a clear understanding of AI capabilities and limitations and be supported by academic departments and teaching centers. Another aspect of concern is equitable access to AI tools and training. The paid version of ChatGPT, for example, gives certain students an advantage over those who cannot afford it. Additionally, students with more free time to experiment with AI develop better skills than their peers with part-time jobs.
